Modern Languages Department

Bienvenue! Welcome! ¡Bienvenidos!

We live in an increasingly connected world. Your options for education, work, and travel become much wider if you learn other languages.  Take our courses to improve your French and learn Spanish!

Our department offers a Core Program in French as a Second Language.  By completing 4 years of study from Grades 9-12, students will receive a French Certificate of Merit at Graduation. However, in addition to our usual Core French program,  since the school year 2019-20, we have been offering an Introduction to Spanish Course! Students will be introduced to the Spanish language and culture through fun and interactive activities.

By studying French and other languages you will:

  • develop your understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures
  • increase your competitive edge -and salary!- in a global job market
  • enhance your first-language and overall literacy skills
  • understand Canada's history and develop an appreciation of French culture
  • improve your memory
  • travel with ease

In our Core French classes, students will communicate and interact with growing confidence in French, one of Canada’s official languages, while developing the knowledge, skills, and perspectives they need to participate fully as citizens in Canada and in the world.   We accomplish this through action-oriented classrooms and an inquiry-based approach to learning.

Students will demonstrate their language competency through spontaneous and prepared conversations, dramatizations, media projects, individual oral and written tasks, and collaborative group work. The interdisciplinary nature of language will allow students to gain a greater understanding of the diversity of cultures through the study and exploration of media, film, music, poetry, novels, plays, history, geography, and world issues.

21st Century ‘Deep Learning’ Global Competencies

The study of languages helps students to express themselves with confidence and develops their ability to solve problems and to think creatively. These skills enable students to analyze and use information from around the world and to communicate effectively.  Learning languages is a catalyst for personal growth and for active participation as world citizens!
