- Guidance counsellors have now opened our booking calendars for students to book appointments. Links to our calendars can be found on the Guidance google classrooms. For parents/guardians who would like to book an appointment: Please email your child’s guidance counsellor directly so we can make sure we book enough time with you. You can find our names, contact information and alphas (last names) we work with on the Guidance section of the Bur Oak SS website.
- Please remind your child to join the Guidance google classroom for their grade as we post a lot of important information on our classrooms. An invitation was sent to their gapps email. If they cannot find that email, please ask them to come to Guidance and we will help them join.
- There are some important upcoming events that will be taking place in the next few weeks:
- Thursday September 24th - There will be 3 important events:
- Presentation for Grade 12 students - Period 5 in the Cafeteria - The presentation will focus on reminding students about their graduation requirements and making sure they have a plan to complete them, as well as post-secondary planning and applications.
- Parent/Guardian Presentations - 4:30 to 5:30 - There will be a presentation for parents/guardians of grade 9 and 10 students which will focus on Navigating High School. It will take place in the Learning Commons. There will be a presentation for parents/guardians of grade 11 and 12 students which will focus on Navigating Post-Secondary Pathways. It will take place in the Cafeteria.
- College/University Fair at Bur Oak SS - 6 pm to 8 pm - Ontario college and university representatives will be available to provide information about their schools and to answer questions. Representatives will be in the Atrium, Cafeteria and Learning Commons.
- September 26 & 27 - Ontario Universities’ Fair (OUF) - The fair will take place from 9:30 am to 5 pm, daily at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, South Building. Visit the OUF website for more information and to register.
- September 28 – October 2 - Grade 9 presentations in period 2 - During these presentations, we will introduce students to our Guidance and Learning Commons staff. We will discuss available services and resources as well as how to access them. The Guidance presentation will also include information regarding community involvement hours and mental health and wellness.
- Sunday, October 4 - SchoolFinder Fair - Location: the Toronto Reference Library, The Bram & Bluma Appel Salon. There will be seminars from 12 pm to 1 pm and the fair will run from 1 pm to 5 pm. At this fair, students and their families can explore universities, colleges, gap years, and work/study abroad options.Visit the SchoolFinder Fairs website for more information and to register.
- Wednesday, October 14 to Friday October 16 - College Information Program (CIP) Tour in Toronto - There will be 3 fair-style events in the GTA:
- Wednesday, October 14 - Humber Polytechnic, 10 am to 1 pm
- Thursday, October 15 - George Brown Polytechnic, 10 am to 2 pm
- Friday October 16 - Centennial College, 10 am to 1 pm

We have noticed a high amount of congestion in the parking lots before and after school. Please be mindful at the end of the day that cars waiting to pick up students should not be blocking any parked cars. People need to be able to exit in a timely manner.
To help with this, please consider picking up students on neighbouring streets, or delaying your pick-up 10-15 minutes until congestion has cleared
The York Region School Board is committed to ensuring the safety of students, staff, and visitors in the event of an emergency situation. As such, beginning next week, during Safety Week (Monday, September 28 to Friday, October 2, 2026) and throughout the school year, schools in our Board practise various safety drills, including Fire Drills, Lockdown Drills, Hold and Secure Drills and Bomb Threat Drills. It is critical that all members of our school community become familiar with emergency protocols, as they are designed to keep us all safe at school. Please refer to Board Policy #669.0 for more information about Emergency Preparedness and Crisis Management.
Practicing drills may create some anxiety for some students. If you are concerned about how these situations might impact the mental health and well-being of your child, please contact school administrators, as we have school mental health professionals available to support your child.
Families of YRDSB black students are invited to attend the monthly session of understanding and navigating the education system. The focus for this session will be about attendance and participation and what the new policy means.

Contact Information
We ask families to ensure the school office has the most up-to-date contact information. This is important in case of emergency situations. If your contact information has changed, please notify the school office.
Back-to-School Forms
Parents/guardians received an email from YRDSB Update with instructions to complete back-to-school forms. It is important that these forms are completed as soon as possible at the start of the school year as they contain information and permissions.
The forms can be found in the family dashboard at family.yrdsb.ca. Click on the arrow by your child’s name and select the start-up forms button. You can choose your language. Please follow these steps for each child. Forms will automatically populate with your child’s information through the Dashboard.

The forms are also available online at https://startupforms.yrdsb.ca. You will need your child’s student number. Tips are available on the Board website. Translation is also available on the website.
Please note: You must complete a separate form for each child attending school. If you prefer to complete the forms on paper or have questions about the information in the forms, please contact the school office.
Secondary School Student Forms
Secondary school students can complete the secondary school student form at https://startupforms.yrdsb.ca/students. They will also receive the link in their student GAPPS account. Elementary school students do not need to complete these student forms.
