Course: Philosophy (HZB3M): The Big Questions
Prerequisite: Grade 10 History
Philosophy differs from most courses because, in philosophy courses, you are not taught what to think but rather how to think. Philosophy not only sets you up for success, but it is also fun!
Philosophy will be fun for you if:
You can’t help but ask, “why?”
You enjoy critically assessing and developing arguments.
You like the challenge of grappling with issues that have been studied by some of the greatest thinkers of every age.
You like thinking about issues and problems in a variety of ways.
You are interested in finding answers to difficult and fundamental questions.
Students who learn philosophy get a great many benefits from doing so. The tools taught by philosophy are of great use in your other classes, future education, and employment. Philosophy students learn how to express themselves clearly, and to assess information with a critical eye; they are taught to spot bad reasoning and how to avoid it in their work.
The most important reason to study philosophy is that it is of enormous and enduring interest. All of us have to answer, for ourselves, the questions asked by philosophers. Through philosophy, you will learn how to ask the questions well and how you might begin to develop responses.
